Greenhouse Gas Emissions Management
The AlamTri Group proactively manages Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and takes an active role in climate change mitigation. This management is not only a manifestation of environmental responsibility but is also recognized as a strategic step to ensure the long-term business resilience of the AlamTri Group.
In this context, the AlamTri Group is committed to continuous innovation and investment in sustainable solutions to reduce environmental impact. The Company’s concrete measures include reducing energy consumption without compromising production levels, along with improving operational efficiency. The AlamTri Group has also developed a Roadmap for GHG Emission Reduction by 2060 or earlier to achieve net zero emission (NZE). This roadmap is a crucial step in setting emission management targets. Thus, the AlamTri Group not only makes a positive contribution to the environment but also builds a solid foundation for a sustainable and responsive business to the evolving global market demands for sustainability.
We implement the use of low-carbon and renewable energy through various efforts, such as:
- Since 2013, AlamTri has utilized 5% biodiesel (B5), which has progressively increased, reaching 40% biodiesel (B40) usage starting in 2025.
- Installed solar panels with a total capacity of 200 kWp to supply electricity for internal consumption (house load) in power plant operations.
- Implemented biomass co-firing at the PT Makmur Sejahtera Wisesa (MSW) coal-fired power plant, reaching 5.04% of primary energy. This program partially substitutes coal combustion with wood chips, shredded waste, and sawdust.
- Installed solar panels at PT Maruwai Coal to supply electricity for selected public street lighting and bridge lighting along hauling roads.
- Increased the number of electric vehicles at MSW for employee transportation. This initiative has reduced diesel fuel consumption by approximately 16,342 liters, equivalent to an annual Scope 1 emission reduction of 26.96 tonnes CO2e.
- Deployed production equipment utilizing advanced low carbon technologies.
- Implemented an energy management system.
AlamTri assessed the feasibility of available technology options to ensure effective decarbonization measures, such as low-carbon fuel and low-carbon operational fleet technologies, carbon removal, and renewable offset mechanisms (carbon credits and renewable energy certificates). Furthermore, AlamTri will stay abreast of and adopt decarbonization technology advancements to support the achievement of its NZE commitments.
Maintaining Air Quality
Various efforts are made to control emissions, including non-GHG emissions, such as:
- Electrostatic Precipitator at MSW to control non-GHG emissions.
- Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS) which has been integrated with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry through the Continuous Industry Monitoring Information System (SISPEK).
- Nozzle sprays to utilize runoff water to maintain ambient air quality.
- Planting trees to reduce particulate exposure.
Climate-related Risks
AlamTri identifies two categories of climate-related risks that may affect the Company’s operations and financial performance, namely transition risks and physical risks. Transition risks relate to changes in regulations, policies, and technological developments in the shift toward a low carbon economy. Physical risks relate to changing climate patterns and extreme weather events that may affect the mining operations and aluminium smelter of AlamTri’s subsidiaries. Further information about these risks including the potential financial impact and mitigation actions can be seen in the Risk Management part and the Sustainability Report.
Water and Waste Management
Water Management
The protection of water resources plays a central role in maintaining the sustainability of ecosystems and meeting human needs. Recognizing the importance of water resources, the AlamTri Group has taken concrete measures to ensure responsible water management in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. We carefully manage water withdrawal to maintain the water balance in the surrounding environment. Through a comprehensive water management approach, the Company ensures efficient water use and takes action to prevent water scarcity.
Waste Management
Proper waste management is key to reducing environmental impact and maintaining the sustainability of the industry. Therefore, AlamTri emphasizes compliance with applicable environmental regulations and standards in Indonesia and the places where we operate, in addition to adopting the latest innovations and technologies in waste management to minimize its negative impacts. We also prioritize the 3R concept (reduce, reuse, recycle) in our waste management. Regarding waste management, our approaches are as follows:
- Utilizing organic waste as livestock feed for the community.
- Composting waste as fertilizer for reclamation activities.
- Repurposing usable solid waste residues for operational activities.
- Disposing non-recyclable inorganic solid waste and residues to the Landfill (TPA).
Biodiversity Management
AlamTri, through its subsidiaries, is committed to preserving biodiversity as outlined in its Integrated Management System Policy Statement. This commitment has been translated into various biodiversity conservation and management programs implemented by the Company in collaboration with its partners.
These commitments have also been incorporated into the Feasibility Study, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Biodiversity Baseline Study, and biodiversity management action plan (BMAP), since the mining planning stage. These documents identify potential risks and impacts on biodiversity while also outlining the management and monitoring measures. The aseline environmental conditions outlined in the document are then used as a benchmark for setting biodiversity impact management objectives and strategies prior to the commencement of operational activities. This is in line with Target 14 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), namely “Integrate Biodiversity into Decision-Making at Every Level.”
Further, this planning framework is translated into a structured management mechanism through the Biodiversity Risk Assessment and the Biodiversity Management Action Plan (BMAP). The BMAP covers five key areas: management of operational impacts, management of forests or habitats, management of rare, endangered, endemic, and protected species (REEPS), stakeholder engagement, and community participation.
The other biodiversity conservation programs including:
- Endemic plant rescue.
- Biodiversity Observation Program (OKE HATI).
- Installation of camera traps.
- Arboreal bridge.
- Deer breeding facility.
- Arboretum.
Enviromental Reclamation and Rehabilitation
AlamTri through its subsidiaries conducts reclamation on lands affected by operational activities, aiming to restore and enhance environmental quality while reinstating ecosystem functions so that they can function as their intended use. In addition to reclamation activities in former mining areas, the Company also implements watershed rehabilitation activities to restore and protect the ecosystem around the operational area.
